News: Kal Back in the White House

News: Kal Back in the White House

Just a bit late with this (sorry guys, been busy!) but as you may have heard Kal’s headed back to work for President Obama and the American People, here’s what Politico had to say:

When Kalpen Modi (aka Kal Penn) left 1600 Penn. for the big screen back in June, senior White House aides said they would always welcome him back if he chose to return.

And the actor did just that on Monday—he resumed work in the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Penn—who left the White House to film the third installment of “Harold & Kumar” —will now be an associate director, White House Spokesman Shin Inouye said in a statement on Monday.

“While OPE works collectively on conducting outreach to the American public and various organizations, he will be the point person for those in the Arts, Youth, and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities,” Inouye said.

In recent weeks, Modi—who campaigned for Obama in 2008—hinted at a possible return to politics when he appeared on the campaign trail with Democratic candidates.

By the way, Kal Penn fans, his movie entitled “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” is scheduled for release in 2011.

Article: Kal Responds to Joel Stein

Article: Kal Responds to Joel Stein

Great article published by Kal on Huffington Post in response to Time writer Joel Stein‘s hideously racist douche baggery in an article he wrote, “My Own Private India“:

I want to applaud Joel Stein for his hilarious account of Edison, New Jersey in his Time magazine article this week, “My Own Private India”; it is as unique and groundbreaking as Thomas Alva himself.

Were it not for the intelligent, fresh sense of humor of individuals like Mr. Stein, the world may never know about Americans who happen to be of Indian descent. Gags about impossibly spicy food? I’d never heard those before! Multiple Gods with multiple arms? Multiple laughs! Recounting racial slurs like “dot-head”? Oh, Mr. Stein, is too good! I don’t know how he comes up with such unique bits. (I was worried that he’d missed an opportunity to joke about Dr. King’s predecessor, Gandhi, but I see that he got to that hilarity on Twitter. More never-before-heard satire!

Read More @ Huffington Post and PLEASE let Time know that this is unacceptable by making your voice heard – call or write the magazine, or if you’re feeling brave tweet @TheJoelStein and let him know what you think of the awful things he said. This happened in America and in the year 2010, and it’s absolutely disgraceful.

News: Harold & Kumar 3 Begins Production

As some of you already know, Kal is slated to return as Kumar in the third installment of the popular franchise – this time a Christmas film – and production has reportedly already begun with the likes of John Cho, Neil Patrick Harris and the ever hilarious Patton Oswalt. Here’s what CNN had to say:

“In order to fulfill a commitment he made prior to the start of his employ here, Mr. Modi resigned his post on June 1,” White House spokesman Shin Inouye told CNN. “We deeply appreciate his service and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

News: Kal to Finish Filming “Bhopal” in India

News: Kal to Finish Filming “Bhopal” in India

It looks like the June shooting for Bhopal has been moved to July. I can’t wait for this film! Here’s what The Times of India had to say:

In early April, Kal Penn had announced that he’d be joining the Obama White House as Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Liason.

Needless to say, this was a big moment for Indians. And now, the good news is that Penn is scheduled to visit India in July. No, not in any official capacity, but to shoot the remaining portions of Ravi Kumar’s Bhopal — Prayer for Rain.

News: Kal Weighs In on Prop 8

News: Kal Weighs In on Prop 8

This isn’t exactly Kal news (though he did weigh in on the issue), but it’s something that’s just driving me insane. This Prop 8, may as well be “Plessy v. Ferguson”-style BS that makes not one ounce of sense at all. I’m not just speaking as someone who does not identify as straight, I’m actually appalled that in California of all places they could pass legislation like this. Here’s what Kal had to say:

‘Harold and Kumar’ star Kal Penn, who left Hollywood this year to work at the White House, posed a question for gay marriage opponents: “So if the CA Supreme Court & voters are so concerned with the “sanctity of marriage”, how about we make divorce illegal too? Any takers?”
